New Delhi, September 4, 2026: Warner Bros. Discovery is set to close the standalone discovery+ app and website in India on November 3, 2026, marking the end of the service as a direct streaming platform in the country. The company has already stopped accepting new discovery+ subscriptions in India from September 3.
The change does not mean that discovery+ shows will disappear from India. Warner Bros. Discovery plans to continue offering its content through partner platforms, giving viewers other ways to watch many of the programmes that have been available on discovery+.
What Happens to Existing discovery+ Subscribers?
Existing subscribers will be affected based on the type of plan they currently have.
For monthly subscribers, auto-renewal will stop on October 3, 2026. Users will still be able to watch Discovery+ until the end of their current paid billing period. Once that period ends, the subscription will not renew.
Annual subscribers will follow a slightly different process. If an annual plan ends between October 3 and November 3, users can continue watching until the plan expires, but it will not be renewed.
Users with annual subscriptions that remain active beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused part of their subscription after the standalone service closes.
New Discovery+ Subscriptions Have Already Stopped
The shutdown process has already started. From September 3, people in India can no longer buy a new discovery+ subscription directly from Warner Bros. Discovery or through third-party providers.
The next important date is October 3, when monthly auto-renewals will stop. The standalone discovery+ app and website will then be discontinued in India on November 3.
For current users, these dates matter because access will depend on their billing cycle and plan expiry date.
Where Will discovery+ Content Be Available in India?
The biggest question for regular viewers is where they will be able to watch discovery+ programmes after the app closes.
According to current reports, discovery+ content will continue to be available through partner services in India. These include Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV.
Warner Bros. Discovery has not yet shared full details on how every show, documentary or series will be placed across these platforms. This means viewers may need to check the partner service they use to find out whether a specific title is available.
For fans of factual entertainment, documentaries, lifestyle programmes, food shows, true crime and nature content, the closure is therefore more about a change in how they access the content than the complete removal of discovery+ programming from India.
Why Is the Standalone discovery+ App Closing?
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed the shutdown and subscriber arrangements, but reports on the announcement have not provided a detailed company explanation for why the standalone discovery+ service is being discontinued in India.
The move does change the way discovery+ reaches viewers in the country. Instead of asking users to subscribe through a separate discovery+ app, the company will continue making its content available through larger streaming and TV services.
Warner Bros. Discovery has also been working with Indian streaming platforms for other parts of its content business. In April 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery and JioHotstar announced an expanded partnership that brought HBO Max to India through JioHotstar.
However, HBO Max on JioHotstar is a separate arrangement and should not be confused with the current list of partner platforms carrying discovery+ content.
What Should discovery+ Users Do Now?
People who already have a discovery+ subscription do not need to make an immediate change simply because the closure has been announced.
Monthly users should check their next billing date, while annual subscribers should check when their current plan expires.
Those whose annual plans continue beyond November 3 should also watch for messages from Discovery+ regarding the refund process.
Users who mainly watch one or two discovery+ shows may also want to check which partner platform carries those programmes before paying for another service.
The key point is that November 3, 2026, will mark the end of the standalone discovery+ app and website in India, not the end of discovery+ content in the country. Viewers will still have access through partner platforms, although the exact availability of individual shows may differ from one service to another.
