Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress, has vacated his official bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi and moved to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s residence, following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha due to his conviction in a defamation case. He had been staying at the 12, Tughlaq Lane residence for almost two decades, but had to vacate the premises by April 22, as per the notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
The Congress party launched a social media campaign called “MeraGharAapkaGhar”, which means “my home is your home”, with party leaders offering their homes to Gandhi. The party also criticized the government’s move to evict him, stating that Gandhi occupies a place in the hearts and homes of millions of Indians.
Gandhi, accompanied by his mother and sister, visited the bungalow on Saturday morning to hand over the keys to officials of the Central Public Works Department. He then shifted to his mother’s residence at 10, Janpath.
The former Congress chief was convicted and sentenced to two years in a defamation case over his Modi surname remarks made in Kolar in Karnataka in 2019. He moved a sessions court against the magistrate’s order, but his plea was rejected. The Congress party stated that the conviction and disqualification would not deter him from raising his voice for the people and speaking truth to power.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that Gandhi is not worried about his post or government house, as he did not compromise on his principles even after risking everything. Party MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted that Gandhi’s exemplary gesture to move out of his official bungalow shows his respect for the rules.
